Teen Hacker Suspected in Breach of French Identity Document Agency
A teenage hacker is under suspicion for breaching the **National Agency for Secure Documents (ANTS)**, a French government agency responsible for issuing identity documents. The breach potentially exposed the personal data of millions of French citizens, leading to a police investigation and the suspect's arrest.
French authorities are investigating a potential data breach at the **National Agency for Secure Documents (ANTS)**, the agency responsible for processing applications for passports, national identity cards, residence permits, and driverโs licenses. A teenage hacker is suspected of being behind the intrusion and attempting to sell the stolen data on cybercriminal forums.
**Suspect in Custody**
The minor was taken into police custody on April 25th. The suspect is believed to have operated online under the pseudonym "breach3d," an alias used to advertise between 12 million and 18 million records for sale earlier this month. The cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutorโs office initiated the investigation after the data surfaced on underground marketplaces.
**Compromised Data**
**ANTS** confirmed unusual activity on its network and acknowledged the authenticity of the circulating information. The compromised data may include login credentials, names, email addresses, birth dates, and unique account identifiers. Additional personal details, such as postal addresses, phone numbers, and places of birth, may also be affected.
**Legal Repercussions**
Authorities have opened an investigation into fraudulent access and data extraction from a state-run automated personal data processing system. Under French law, these offenses carry penalties of up to seven years in prison and a โฌ300,000 ($350,000) fine. Prosecutors have requested the minor be formally charged and placed under judicial supervision, alleging involvement in various activities related to the attack, including unauthorized access, data extraction, and possession of cyber intrusion tools.
**France's Recent Cybercrime Activity**
This incident is part of a series of high-profile data breach investigations in France. Earlier this month, authorities arrested a 20-year-old suspect known online as โHexDex,โ believed to be responsible for dozens of intrusions targeting public institutions, sports federations, and private organizations. In January, police also detained an 18-year-old accused of leaking and selling the personal data of more than one million members of the French Shooting Federation.
