Anthropic Temporarily Restricts Claude Fable 5 Access on Subscriptions Amid High Demand
Anthropic's most powerful AI model, **Claude Fable 5**, is facing temporary restrictions on subscription plans due to overwhelming demand. While initially sparking concerns about a permanent pay-to-play model, **Anthropic** has clarified that the move to usage-based billing after July 7th is a stopgap measure, with plans to restore **Fable 5** to standard subscriptions once capacity allows.
Following the lifting of U.S. government export controls, **Anthropic** recently restored access to its advanced AI models, **Fable 5** and **Mythos 5**, making them globally available across **Claude.ai**, **Claude Code**, **Claude Cowork**, and the **Claude Platform**.
However, the widespread availability of **Fable 5** has led to unprecedented demand, prompting **Anthropic** to implement a temporary change in its billing structure for the model.
### Fable 5 Moves to Usage-Based Billing
**Anthropic** announced that for "Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans," **Fable 5** would be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits until July 7th. After this date, access will transition to usage credits.
This announcement initially caused apprehension among users, who feared that **Fable 5** was becoming a permanent premium feature, moving away from its inclusion in standard subscription tiers.
### Capacity Challenges and Future Plans
A lead engineer from **Claude Code** addressed these concerns on X, clarifying the company's intentions. "While it will come off subscriptions after July 7th, we aim to restore Fable as a standard part of our subscriptions as soon as capacity allows, as we mentioned in our original blog post."
**Anthropic** acknowledged the difficulty in predicting the demand for **Fable 5**, stating that it expects usage to be "very high, and difficult to predict." The company prefers to offer access sooner rather than later, even if it means a more conservative, staged rollout for subscription plans.
Currently, **Fable 5** remains fully available via the **Claude API** and consumption-based Enterprise plans. However, for users on standard subscription plans relying on **Fable 5**, the shift to usage-credit billing is imminent after the July 7th deadline, with no immediate alternative for continued included access.
