Belgium's Tax Portal Down After Cyberattack, Filing Deadline Extended
Belgium's primary online tax portal, **MyMinfin**, has been taken offline following a cyberattack, just days before a crucial filing deadline for some taxpayers. The **Federal Public Service Finance (FPS Finance)** is currently investigating the incident, with no immediate indication of a data breach, though the possibility remains under scrutiny.
### Belgian Tax Portal Offline Amid Cyberattack
The **Federal Public Service Finance (FPS Finance)**, the Belgian ministry overseeing taxation and financial administration, announced Wednesday that its main online tax platform, **MyMinfin**, has been temporarily suspended due to a cyberattack. The incident occurred perilously close to an October 31 deadline for certain income tax filings.
As a direct consequence of the disruption, **FPS Finance** has confirmed that affected taxpayers will be granted an extension, with a new deadline to be announced in due course.
### Investigation Underway, Data Breach Unconfirmed
Belgian authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators behind the attack or disclose the method of intrusion into government systems. Crucially, **FPS Finance** has stated, "Currently, there is no indication that a data breach has occurred or that any data has been stolen." However, investigators are actively exploring the potential for data exposure.
The decision to take services offline was a precautionary measure, allowing specialists to assess the full impact of the attack and implement necessary technical safeguards. While **MyMinfin** and other affected services remain inaccessible, several other government applications are reportedly fully or partially operational.
### Prior Security Alerts and PHP Vulnerabilities
This latest incident follows an earlier security alert this month that led to the temporary shutdown of several Belgian government websites. At the time, **FPS Finance** cited an "international security issue" as the reason for the precautionary measure, without elaborating further.
This earlier disruption coincided with a widespread cybersecurity alert concerning two critical vulnerabilities in **PHP**, a widely used programming language. These flaws could potentially enable attackers to execute malicious code remotely on vulnerable servers. Numerous government websites across Europe were temporarily taken offline to address these vulnerabilities. Belgian news outlets, including *The Brussels Times*, reported that **FPS Finance** websites were among those impacted.
Belgium's national cybersecurity center had previously stated that it had received no reports of successful attacks exploiting the **PHP** flaws against Belgian websites. It remains unclear whether there is any connection between Wednesday's cyberattack and these earlier security alerts or the **PHP** vulnerabilities. Belgian authorities have not publicly established any link between the incidents.
