Europol Dismantles 'Crime-as-a-Service' Ring Behind Global Investment Scams
European law enforcement, in a coordinated international operation, has arrested seven suspects and seized over 100 servers linked to a sophisticated 'crime-as-a-service' enterprise. This network is believed to have supplied fraudulent trading platforms to criminal gangs, enabling investment scams that have victimized individuals in at least 50 countries.

European law enforcement authorities, supported by **Europol** and **Eurojust**, have announced a significant breakthrough in the fight against online investment fraud. A joint action involving authorities from Albania, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Kosovo, and North Macedonia resulted in seven arrests and the seizure of more than 100 servers.
### Four Years of Investigation Uncover Global Scheme
This coordinated effort follows a four-year investigation that began in 2022. The initial catalyst was a report from a German couple unable to withdraw funds from an online trading platform. This led investigators to uncover a vast network of call center operators behind numerous investment scams, impacting victims across at least 50 countries.
Evidence gathered from earlier interventions in 2022 and 2025 pointed to a company allegedly operating a 'crime-as-a-service' model from Cyprus and Israel. This entity reportedly provided the infrastructure for these fraudulent operations, with suspected clients running call centers in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia.
### The Anatomy of the Scam
Criminals leveraged deceptive advertisements to lure potential victims to fraudulent investment platforms, promising substantial and quick returns on foreign currencies, stocks, or cryptocurrency. Once engaged, victims' personal data was stolen and then sold to criminal groups operating call centers.
Operators at these call centers would then contact victims with supposed lucrative investment opportunities. They encouraged small initial transfers, showcasing fictitious profits on fake online accounts to build credibility. These fabricated gains were used to exert psychological pressure, pushing victims into larger investments. However, when victims attempted to withdraw their funds, scammers employed delaying tactics before ultimately cutting off contact, leaving victims with no recourse.
### A Broader Crackdown on Investment Fraud
This latest operation is part of a broader, ongoing effort by European law enforcement to dismantle sophisticated criminal rings involved in investment fraud. Recent successes include:
* **March 2022**: The shutdown of a massive call-center investment fraud network that employed 200 'traders' and stole at least โฌ3 million monthly.
* **2023**: Multiple call centers linked to millions in losses from 'pig butchering' or romance baiting scams were taken down across Europe.
* **May 2024**: Police shut down 12 fraud call centers responsible for thousands of daily scam calls.
* **July 2025**: Spanish police dismantled a crypto investment fraud ring that laundered over โฌ460 million ($540 million) from more than 5,000 victims worldwide.
* **April**: Austrian and Albanian authorities disrupted a criminal organization running a large-scale cryptocurrency investment fraud operation, linked to estimated losses exceeding โฌ50 million ($58.5 million).
These ongoing efforts highlight the increasing collaboration among international law enforcement agencies to combat the evolving tactics of online financial criminals.
