Flipper Zero Shifts to Community-Driven Firmware Development Amidst New Device Focus
The popular portable penetration testing tool, **Flipper Zero**, is transitioning its firmware development model. **Flipper Devices**, the gadget's creator, announced a shift to a smaller internal team and increased reliance on community contributions, signaling a new era for the versatile device's evolution.

**Flipper Devices** has confirmed that official firmware for the **Flipper Zero** will continue to be maintained, but full-time feature development from their internal team has concluded. This strategic pivot comes as the company directs its resources towards new hardware projects.
### Focusing on New Horizons
The company is now concentrating efforts on developing new devices, including the **Flipper One**, an open Linux platform that also seeks community assistance for its completion. Additionally, **Flipper Devices** recently unveiled the **Busy Bar**, a productivity tool designed to aid individuals with ADHD by minimizing distractions. The **Busy Bar** is scheduled for open sale on July 14 in the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Canada.
### Firmware Maturity and Community Backlash
**Flipper Zero Firmware 1.0**, the first major stable release, was announced in September 2024, following three years of intensive development. The latest official stable release, **version 1.4.3**, became available in December 2025. At this point, the development team believed the firmware had reached a mature state, boasting a stable SDK, robust APIs, and all promised features fully implemented.
Recent communications from **Flipper Devices** had inadvertently given the impression that firmware development had ceased, leading to significant community dissatisfaction. To address these concerns and engage its extensive user base, the company has outlined a new, collaborative approach to **Flipper Zero** firmware development.
### A New Collaborative Development Model
The project will now operate with limited internal resources and a refined interaction model for community contributions:
* **Flipper Zero** requests will undergo weekly evaluations.
* Communication with the development team will be exclusively through **GitHub Discussions**, where new feature requests will also be voted upon by the community.
* Community pull requests will be accepted, subject to stricter review criteria.
* All firmware changes will necessitate mandatory integration and regression testing, with opportunities for community participation.
### Oversight and User Empowerment
The development team will retain oversight, paying particular attention to AI-generated code affecting low-level functions due to verification challenges, as well as changes impacting the user interface or requiring documentation updates. With over a million **Flipper Zero** users, the volume of communication has become unmanageable for the small team, prompting the disabling of direct messages across all social media channels.
All future requests will be submitted via **GitHub Discussions** and prioritized based on community votes, empowering users to directly influence the future development of **Flipper Zero**.
