Meta's Muse Image AI Leverages Public Instagram Content by Default, Raising Privacy Concerns
Meta has launched **Muse Image**, a new AI model that automatically uses public Instagram posts and reels to generate AI content, a feature enabled by default. This move allows users to create new visuals by tagging public Instagram accounts, raising significant privacy considerations for content creators.
Social media giant **Meta** has rolled out **Muse Image**, its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, which is designed to generate AI content using publicly available **Instagram** posts and reels. The feature is enabled by default, meaning user content is automatically made available for AI-driven creations unless explicitly opted out.
**Meta** stated that users can "@-mention Instagram accounts in the **Meta AI** app to bring specific Instagram profiles right into your images." This functionality allows for the creation of custom event invitations, collaborative concepts, or personalized graphics by leveraging public photos from tagged accounts.
**Muse Image** is the inaugural image-focused AI model from **Meta's Superintelligence Labs**. The company claims it uses advanced reasoning to comprehend complex prompts and seamlessly blend multiple photos into high-quality creations, shareable across **Meta's** platforms and beyond.
Integration of **Muse Image** is also underway for **WhatsApp** and **Instagram**, facilitating AI-powered effects for **Instagram Stories** and image generation within direct chats with **Meta AI** on **WhatsApp**. These features are currently rolling out in a limited number of countries.

### Content Reuse and Discoverability
Users have the option to tag another public **Instagram** account within the **Meta AI** app to generate new reels, posts, or stories that can reuse "part or all of your published photos, videos or reels." This effectively transforms public content into fodder for AI-generated images.
**Meta** notes in a help document that "people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta." Depending on the settings of the other user, this reused content could potentially be discoverable in search engine results.
### Account Privacy and Deletion Policies
Should a user switch from a public to a private account, all reels, posts, and stories created using their content will be deleted from **Instagram** if the account remains private for over 24 hours. However, content already generated by others using the AI features will not be deleted.
For **Instagram** users under 18 with public accounts, only their followers can reuse media if their account settings permit such reuse.
It's crucial to note that users will not receive notifications when their images are remixed using AI. Notifications will still be sent if a public account reuses content for traditional remixes, sequences, stickers, and templates.

### How to Opt-Out
**Meta** emphasizes that users retain full control over how their content can be tagged for AI creation and provides an option to disable it. To do so:
1. Open **Instagram**
2. Go to your **profile**
3. Tap the **β° menu**
4. Open **Settings and activity**
5. Tap **Sharing and reuse**
6. Scroll to **Allow people to create with and reuse your content**
7. Turn off: **Posts** and **Reels**
**Instagram** users with public profiles are strongly advised to disable this setting, as content created prior to disabling it will not be deleted. This feature is expected to be rolled out soon to **Facebook**, **Messenger**, and for advertisers through **Meta Advantage+ creative**.
### Part of a Broader Industry Trend
This development by **Meta** aligns with a growing industry trend where tech companies increasingly embed AI into their products, often as an opt-out rather than opt-in feature, to enhance their AI services.
In recent weeks, **Google** also introduced a new **Search Services History** option in its privacy settings. This allows the company to store media, including images, files, audio, and video recordings, to improve its AI models for signed-in users.
**Google** elaborated in a support document: "Your media may be used to improve your experience on Google services, like letting you revisit your past visual searches." They added, "Saved media may be used to develop and improve Google's AI models and technologies, as well as the Google services that use them. When media is saved, you can view it in your **Search Services History**."
**Google** further stated, "Google also uses your history to provide, develop, and improve its services (such as training generative AI models) and to protect Google, its users, and the public with the help of human reviewers."
Separately, **Google** has also added a new "Personalized Recommendations" setting. When enabled, this feature utilizes an account's profile information, **Search Services History**, and other saved activity across **Google** sites and apps to deliver tailored results in Search and AI responses, curated feeds in **Google Search** and **News Apps**, and content relevant to their location.
