Microsoft Extends Free Windows 10 ESU for Consumers Until 2027
In an unannounced move, **Microsoft** has quietly extended its free **Windows 10** Extended Security Updates (**ESU**) program for consumers by an additional year. This extension means enrolled devices will continue to receive critical security updates until October 12, 2027, offering users more time to transition to newer operating systems like **Windows 11**.

**Microsoft** has discreetly prolonged its free **Windows 10** Extended Security Updates (**ESU**) program for personal use, pushing the expiration date for security updates to October 12, 2027. This change, which adds an extra year of coverage, was not accompanied by a formal announcement but appeared in updated documentation and as an editor's note on a **Windows Experience Blog** post.
### Unannounced Extension for Consumers
The update was first noticed in **Microsoft's Windows 10 ESU documentation** and subsequently reflected in an "Editor's note" appended to a **Windows Experience Blog** post published on June 24, 2025. The note states: "This post has been updated to reflect that the **Windows 10** Extended Security Updates (**ESU**) program for personal use devices is being provided for an additional year, with coverage now available through Oct. 12, 2027."
This extension aims to provide customers with more flexibility and time to transition to a new **Windows 11** PC while ensuring they continue to receive critical security updates.
### The End of Support and ESU Options
**Windows 10** officially reached its end of support on October 14, 2025. Beyond this date, **Microsoft** ceased providing technical support, feature updates, or security updates for the operating system, with the exception of **Windows LTSC** versions.
Initially, for consumers unable to upgrade to **Windows 11**, **Microsoft** offered a free **ESU** program providing an extra year of security updates, set to expire on October 12, 2026. Enterprise customers, by contrast, had the option to enroll in the **ESU** program for up to three years, incurring a total cost of $427 per device over that period.
With this latest quiet update, the free consumer **ESU** program has been extended by an additional year, now lasting until October 12, 2027.
### Microsoft's Rationale
When questioned about the extension, **Microsoft** provided a statement emphasizing their commitment to customer security during the transition period:
"We understand that moving to a new PC can take time. As part of our ongoing commitment to helping customers stay secure during the transition, the **Windows 10** Extended Security Updates (**ESU**) program for personal devices is being provided for an additional year. Coverage will now be available through October 12, 2027. This gives customers more time and flexibility to find the best PC for their needs while keeping them protected."
### How to Access Free ESU
Consumers can continue to receive extended security updates for free through several methods:
* Paying $30.
* Backing up **Windows** settings to their **Microsoft** account.
* Redeeming 1,000 **Microsoft** reward points.
* Users in the European Economic Area can receive **ESU** for free by logging in to **Windows 10** with a **Microsoft** account.
**Microsoft** confirms that an **ESU** license can be used on up to 10 devices linked to the same **Microsoft** account. Users already enrolled in the program will automatically remain covered until the new October 2027 end date.
It's important to note that the consumer **ESU** program is exclusively for personal devices and does not apply to systems joined to **Active Directory** domains, **Microsoft Entra**, or those managed via Mobile Device Management (**MDM**). However, **Microsoft Entra**-registered devices are eligible.
This extension provides **Windows 10** users with another year of crucial security updates as **Microsoft** continues its efforts to encourage upgrades to **Windows 11** or the purchase of new **Copilot+ PCs**.
