Microsoft is rolling out new Age-Aware APIs for Windows 11, designed to help applications determine a user's age range without exposing sensitive personal data. This initiative aims to streamline age-appropriate content delivery and safeguards, particularly for children and teenagers, while also enhancing parental control visibility during system setup.
**Microsoft** is integrating innovative age-awareness APIs into **Windows 11**, allowing applications to ascertain whether a user is a child, teenager, or adult. Crucially, this system operates without revealing the user's precise date of birth, prioritizing privacy.
These new **Windows Age APIs** leverage information linked to a **Microsoft** account to return predefined age ranges, such as 'under 10', '10-12', '13-15', '16-17', and '18+'.
"Apps receive only the age-related signal needed for the experience and not sensitive personal data such as full date of birth," **Microsoft** clarified in a recent blog post.
Developers will gain access to `GetUserAgeRangeAsync` to retrieve these age groups and `GetAgeVerificationStatusAsync` to determine if a user's age has been officially verified, rather than merely self-reported.
**Microsoft** suggests this functionality will empower apps to automatically tailor features and implement safeguards for younger users, reducing the need for parents to configure each application individually. The company also highlights the relevance of this technology for AI experiences, where age-appropriate protections are becoming increasingly vital.
## Microsoft Streamlines Age Verification Process
Complementing the **Windows Age APIs** is **Microsoft Age Verification (MAV)**, a system that stores a verified age status directly with a user's **Microsoft** account. This aims to achieve a "Verify once → use everywhere" model, allowing apps to check this verification status via the **Windows Age APIs** instead of repeatedly prompting users for age proof.
**MAV** is currently available through **Microsoft** storefronts in Singapore, Brazil, and Australia, with plans for broader regional expansion as regulatory demands evolve.
