**Adebola Festus Adekunle**, 26, and **Mudasiru Afeez Olawale**, 24, were arrested in Nigeria in August 2023 as part of "Operation Artemis." This joint international law enforcement initiative targets sextortion rings operating from Nigeria that prey on minors across the United States and globally. Sextortion is a grave form of online blackmail where cybercriminals threaten to leak stolen or coerced nude images and videos. Beyond explicit content, perpetrators often sell victim data on dark web marketplaces or share personal information—including names, dates of birth, emails, phone numbers, and social media usernames—to facilitate further coercion. ### Charges and Penalties Both individuals now face a maximum penalty of life in prison. The charge of sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death alone carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years. **FBI Director Kash Patel** detailed the specific charges: "**Adekunle** is charged with the sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, the production of child sexual abuse material, coercion and enticement of a minor, and interstate threats with intent to extort – and **Olawale** is charged with offenses relating to sexual exploitation of minors, coercion and enticement of minors, distribution of child pornography, and more."  *Adekunle and Olawale (FBI)* ### Ongoing Threat and Warnings This extradition underscores the persistent threat of online sextortion. Earlier this month, the **FBI** issued a warning about cybercriminals targeting social media accounts of both children and adults to steal explicit content for blackmail purposes. In September 2021, the **FBI** also highlighted a significant increase in sextortion complaints, urging victims to contact law enforcement immediately and cease all communication with the perpetrators. ### Precedents and Deterrents Law enforcement agencies continue to pursue and prosecute sextortionists aggressively. In a notable case in May, a Canadian man received a 33-year prison sentence for targeting over 145 children, some as young as six, in an eight-year-long sextortion scheme. More recently, a member of "**The Com**" online cybercrime collective was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to blackmail and multiple child sexual abuse offenses involving nearly 120 victims worldwide. These sentences serve as a stark reminder of the severe legal consequences for those involved in such heinous crimes.
