OpenAI Rolls Out Smarter, More Reliable GPT-5.6 Sol and Unlimited Free Chats
OpenAI is enhancing its ChatGPT experience with a significant upgrade for both Plus/Pro and Free users. The new **GPT-5.6 Sol** model promises improved factual accuracy and consistency for paid subscribers, while free users will now enjoy unlimited text chats with **GPT-5.6 Luna**, alongside new controls for reasoning depth.

**OpenAI** is deploying a more robust version of **ChatGPT**, **GPT-5.6 Sol**, for Plus and Pro subscribers. Simultaneously, free users are gaining access to unlimited text conversations powered by **GPT-5.6 Luna**.
These updates are designed to make **ChatGPT** more direct, factually precise, and consistent across a range of tasks, from quick queries to complex reasoning.
During testing, a new slider was observed, offering users greater control over the model's reasoning and intelligence.

This slider allows users to adjust **GPT**'s reasoning from "Instant" for rapid responses to "High" for more thorough, albeit potentially slower, processing. This feature is ideal for tailoring the model's effort to the complexity of the task, from simple questions to in-depth research, coding, or strategic planning.
## GPT-5.6 Sol: More Focused and Reliable Answers
**OpenAI** states that **GPT-5.6 Sol** has been specifically fine-tuned for conversational use within **ChatGPT**, distinguishing it from agentic workflows like **Codex** or **ChatGPT Work**.
"It delivers more focused answers, adapts its level of detail to the question, avoids unnecessary formatting, and offers a helpful correction when simply agreeing wouldn't be useful," **OpenAI** announced.
This means simple questions will receive direct answers without superfluous background, while more complex inquiries will provide sufficient detail with clear recommendations.
For instance, a question about the U.S. President will yield a concise answer, whereas an inquiry into U.S. election processes will provide a more detailed explanation.
**OpenAI** also claims that **GPT-5.6 Sol** significantly reduces factual errors, particularly concerning dates, numbers, sources, legal and medical information, financial questions, and assumptions. Internal tests revealed a 68% reduction in responses with at least one factual error compared to **GPT-5.5 Instant**. **GPT-5.6 Luna** showed a 62% reduction in the same evaluation.
## Unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna Chats for Free Users
**GPT-5.6 Luna** is becoming the default model for Free and Go plan users this week, with some already seeing the change. This includes an upcoming removal of rate limits for text chats on these plans, though abuse protections will remain in place. Limits will still apply to other features such as file uploads and image generation.

Free users will also gain a new "Think" button, allowing **GPT-5.6 Luna** additional time to process and reason through more challenging questions.
## No Impact on GPT-5.6 Sol in Codex or Work
The enhanced **GPT-5.6 Sol** is exclusively for **ChatGPT**'s standard conversational experience and does not affect its implementation in **Codex** or **ChatGPT Work**.
**OpenAI** is also implementing additional safeguards for users under 18, including stricter boundaries around sensitive content such as romantic roleplay, sexual content, dangerous activities, eating disorders, body-image risks, age-restricted goods, and graphic violence.
These updates are being rolled out gradually to users.
