Revolut Services Disrupted by Widespread Outage, Google Cloud Implicated
Fintech giant **Revolut** experienced a significant global service disruption affecting millions of users. The outage, which impacted core banking, transfer, and trading functionalities, was later linked to a **Google Cloud** incident in its London data center. While services have reportedly been restored, the event highlights the critical dependencies in modern financial infrastructure.
Digital banking platform **Revolut** faced a major outage today, leaving thousands of its global users unable to access essential services. Reports on **Downdetector** and **Revolut**'s official status page confirmed widespread issues with app access, mobile banking, and funds transfers.
### **Revolut** Confirms Disruption, Assures Safety of Funds
In a statement, **Revolut** acknowledged the disruption, which began Tuesday morning, and assured customers that their data and funds remained secure. "We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe," the company stated.

The outage impacted a broad spectrum of **Revolut**'s offerings, with 28 services, including sign-ins, card payments, transfers, currency exchange, stock trading, and live support chat, initially flagged as partially unavailable on their system status page.
### **Google Cloud** 'Power Event' Identified as Root Cause
The widespread disruption was subsequently linked to an ongoing service interruption affecting **Google Cloud**'s `europe-west2` data center in London. Reports from **Reuters** indicated a "power event" at the data center as the underlying cause.
**Revolut** later confirmed the connection, stating, "Due to a recent Google Cloud outage, customers may have experienced temporary service disruption on the Revolut app today. The issue has now been fixed, and services are now restored. All our customersโ money and data is safe, and has remained safe throughout this incident. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
### Past Security Incidents Highlight Ongoing Challenges
This incident follows a series of security and operational challenges for **Revolut**. Just last month, the company disclosed a data breach where personally identifiable information (PII) of an undisclosed number of customers was shared with a threat actor impersonating a government agency. Four years prior, in September 2022, **Revolut** also reported a data breach impacting over 50,000 customers, resulting in the theft of personal, contact, and financial information.
**Revolut** serves over 80 million customers across more than 160 countries and regions, including 800,000 business clients, offering a comprehensive suite of banking, money management, and investment services. Such widespread outages underscore the intricate interdependencies within the global financial technology ecosystem and the critical importance of robust cloud infrastructure.
