Vastaamo Hacker Hunted: Finland Issues Warrant for Aleksanteri Kivimäki After Appeal Rejection
Finnish authorities have launched a nationwide search for convicted hacker **Aleksanteri Kivimäki** after the Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal. This decision finalizes his nearly seven-year prison sentence for the infamous **Vastaamo** psychotherapy center data breach and subsequent patient extortion, marking a critical development in one of Finland's most significant cybercrime cases.
Finnish police have issued a wanted notice for **Aleksanteri Kivimäki**, a convicted hacker, following the country's Supreme Court's refusal to hear his appeal. This paves the way for authorities to return him to prison to serve his sentence.
The Supreme Court's decision upholds a February Court of Appeal ruling, which sentenced **Kivimäki** to nearly seven years in prison. His conviction stems from hacking the psychotherapy provider **Vastaamo** and subsequently attempting to extort both the company and its vulnerable patients.
### Nationwide Search Underway
Following the ruling, the **Eastern Uusimaa Police** announced the issuance of a wanted notice at the request of Finland's **Criminal Sanctions Agency**. Officers have been instructed to apprehend **Kivimäki** upon location and transfer him to **Vantaa Prison** to complete his sentence.
**Kivimäki's** lawyer, **Peter Jaari**, has informed Finnish media that he is unaware of his client's current whereabouts but believes **Kivimäki** may be outside Finland.
### Grave Crimes and Reduced Sentence
The Court of Appeal found **Kivimäki** guilty of aggravated data breach, attempted extortion, and unlawfully distributing private information. Judges characterized the crimes as meticulously planned, financially motivated, and causing exceptional harm to a large number of particularly vulnerable victims.
While the court noted that the severity of the offenses would typically warrant the maximum available sentence, **Kivimäki's** prison term was reduced by one month. This reduction was due to his reaching compensation agreements with some of the victims.
**Kivimäki** has consistently denied his involvement in the attack throughout the legal proceedings. He argued that prosecutors heavily relied on circumstantial evidence, challenged the digital evidence linking him to the hack, and disputed allegations concerning cryptocurrency transactions tied to the extortion scheme.
### The Infamous Vastaamo Breach
The **Vastaamo** data breach occurred in 2018 but only came to public light in 2020. The attacker initially attempted to extort the company before directly demanding money from thousands of patients.
When many victims refused to comply, confidential therapy notes and other highly sensitive records were published online. The stolen database contained information on approximately 33,000 patients, with over 24,000 individuals reporting receipt of extortion demands. This case became the largest criminal case in Finnish history by victim count, many of whom were children or individuals undergoing treatment for severe psychological trauma.
**Kivimäki** had been released from pretrial detention in September 2023, as the appeals court determined he had served sufficient time in custody, and further detention could violate his rights. He remained free during the appeals process, as most of his sentence had effectively been served while awaiting trial. With the Supreme Court's decision, the conviction is now final, prompting the current efforts by Finnish authorities to locate him.
