WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Enhance Privacy, Concealing Phone Numbers
**WhatsApp**, the messaging behemoth, is rolling out a significant privacy enhancement: usernames. This new feature will allow users to conceal their phone numbers from contacts not already in their address book, a long-requested capability aimed at bolstering user privacy.
In a move set to significantly boost user privacy, **WhatsApp** is finally enabling users to reserve unique usernames. This functionality will allow individuals to hide their phone numbers from those not in their contact list, addressing a critical privacy concern for many of its over 3 billion global users.
### The Shift Towards Enhanced Privacy
**Meta**, the parent company of **WhatsApp**, announced that users can now begin reserving their preferred usernames. This early reservation period is crucial, given the platform's vast user base and the potential for name overlaps. The full feature launch is anticipated later this year.
According to **Meta**'s announcement, "Usernames are our latest step to make **WhatsApp** even more private. There's no directory to browse and no suggestions β people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time." This design choice emphasizes controlled discovery, ensuring users maintain agency over who can initiate contact.
### Introducing the Optional Username Key
Adding another layer of security, **WhatsApp** will also introduce an optional "username key." This key will be a requisite for others to know before they can message a user via their new username, further restricting unsolicited contact.

### Gradual Rollout and Reservation Process
The new usernames feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months. Users will receive notifications once the functionality becomes available in their respective regions. To reserve a username ahead of the full rollout, users can navigate to `Settings > Account > Username` after updating their **WhatsApp** application to the latest version.
Once activated, contacts who do not have a user's phone number saved will only see their chosen username. Users will have the flexibility to change or delete their reserved username at any time, though deleting it will make it available for others to claim.
It's important to note that **Meta** has reserved certain usernames for governments, public figures, and businesses, preventing them from being claimed by general users.
### Following a Trend in Secure Messaging
**WhatsApp**'s move follows a similar privacy enhancement implemented by rival encrypted messaging service, **Signal**. **Signal** introduced custom usernames in February 2024, after a public test phase that began in November 2023, allowing its users to obscure their phone numbers.
